In June 2024, the Global Health Security Conference (GHS2024) held in Sydney, Australia, brought together thought leaders, policymakers, and health professionals from around the world to discuss the pressing issues of global health security. Among the attendees was the Executive Director of MERQ Consultancy, Dr. Alula Teklu, who, attending for the first time actively participated in the event, marking a significant milestone in MERQ’s engagement with the global health community. The GHS 2024, hosted from June 18 to 21, 2024, was a gathering that underscored the critical importance of proactive measures in global public health. The conference, now in its third edition, provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the multifaceted nature of health security, a concept that extends beyond traditional public health boundaries.

The World Health Organization defines global public health security as “the activities required, both proactive and reactive, to minimize the danger and impact of acute public health events that endanger people’s health across geographical regions and international boundaries.” This definition was brought into sharp focus by the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which dominated much of the discourse at GHS 2024. The conference highlighted the necessity of robust health systems that prioritize proactive measures over reactive ones, a theme that resonated deeply with MERQ’s Executive Director.

The conference featured prominent speakers, numerous presentations, and poster sessions, offering a rich tapestry of knowledge and experience. Notable discussions included the integration of the One Health approach, which brings together human, animal, and environmental health disciplines. This approach was further solidified through the concept of One Health Security (OHS), emphasizing the interconnectedness of health security challenges.

Our Executive Director also noted the critical emphasis on lessons learned from the COVID-19 response, particularly the need for multi-sectoral coordination, community engagement, and timely documentation of best practices. Gender equity was another focal point, with discussions on gender-responsive pandemic preparedness and recovery offering thought-provoking perspectives. The pervasive issue of misinformation and disinformation was a recurring theme, highlighting the ongoing challenge of combating false narratives that undermine public health efforts. The conference underscored the need for concerted global efforts to address this challenge effectively.

Reflecting on the conference, the Dr. Alula expressed a renewed sense of purpose in enhancing MERQ’s presence in Australia. The event underscored the importance of global collaboration in health security, inspiring a vision to bring the expertise gained from such international platforms back to Africa. The conference also provided an opportunity to explore Australia’s vibrant cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, enriching the overall experience.

In conclusion, the GHS2024 was not just a conference but a reminder of the collective responsibility humanity shares in safeguarding global health. Dr Alula left Sydney with a strengthened resolve to contribute to this global effort, recognizing that the path to a secure future lies in our ability to work together as one planetary species. The conference also reinforced the value of attending scientific gatherings, where the exchange of ideas and networking with global leaders can significantly enhance professional growth and organizational impact.

The participation of MERQ Consultancy at GHS 2024 marks a significant step in its journey to influence global health security discussions, ensuring that the lessons learned and connections made will drive future initiatives and collaborations.
